Mentorship Member Spotlight: Kidus Solomon, Founder of Angel Fire Media
We had the pleasure of interviewing Kidus Solomon for our Mentorship Member Spotlight. He is the founder and owner of Angel Fire Media.
Tell us about your business! What inspired you to become a nonprofit consultant, and what’s the focus of your work.
Kidus: I help nonprofits transform their communications with individual stories of impact by producing videos, websites, and more to help them better appeal to donors, grant makers, and the general public. My path here began with my profound sense of wanting to contribute towards causes that help humanity achieve, in FDR's words, a world with "freedom from fear, and freedom from want" for all people. This calling led me to volunteer on a congressional campaign while in college, where I discovered I had a talent for creating art to communicate a message in ways that connect with people emotionally, and a passion for creating the systems to do so strategically. I started Angel Fire Media to produce videos and ads for campaigns, and started working with nonprofits to help me better fulfill my mission in the long term. I've since used every client as an opportunity to identify common unfulfilled needs that prevent nonprofits from achieving more for their mission. As a result, I've narrowed down my services for Angel Fire Media to 2 things to help nonprofits amplify their impact — Story Collections, a service to produce and deliver multimedia content featuring the stories of individuals who've benefited from a nonprofit org’s work; and Websites that help them communicate their mission to donors, grant makers, and stakeholders in concise and engaging ways. Through a separate brand called Angel Fire Tech, my team and I provide custom built tech systems to help eliminate technical barriers to growth for nonprofits and other organizations.
What’s a recent project you’re proud of? How did you help the nonprofit organization achieve its goals?
Kidus: We managed a nonprofit's event marketing for their annual fundraiser and doubled attendance to thousands of people, helping them achieve an 83% increase in donations and ticket sale revenue. I'm proud that the fundraising platform that we used, Givebutter, flagged it as one of their favorite campaigns ever.
What advice would you give to new consultants just starting out?
Kidus: In my experience, clients aren't always aware of all the pieces of the puzzle that they need and how it impacts the path to achieving their overall goal. Taking initiative to understand the issues they may have missed, finding the through line between those challenges and your skill sets and passion, and communicating to them about it helps open doors.
How has being part of the Relatable Nonprofit Mentorship Community helped you grow your business?
Kidus: Having access to a community of professionals who've faced similar challenges and can offer different perspectives has been incredibly valuable. More specifically, Catalina has helped me identify opportunities to refine my services in ways that I believe will make it easier for me to grow my business and better serve my clients.
What’s next for you? Any exciting projects or goals you’re working toward?
Kidus: I'm excited about launching a brand new website for Angel Fire Media, along with a landing page for our Story Collections service.
By launching this service, I hope to help at least a dozen nonprofits in the next year share their success stories in innovative and emotionally impactful ways to help them win more grants, more donors, and more hearts.
